Our Philosophy

Key to the quality of services is mature and highly skilled personnel. Staff and volunteers understand we are not change-makers, but that Listening House exists to create a safe and respectful environment to support people who are going through change. Strong communication skills, compassion and an ability to defuse tension helps create a welcoming presence.  One rule is inviolate: Respect other guests, staff and neighbors.  Consequences for offenses could be as short as 10 minutes outside for use of profanity to an indefinite bar if someone is violent or engaged in drug dealing.  Established guidelines help staff apply consequences fairly and there is little objection among guests when a bar is given. In fact it is common for a guest to say, “I’ll come back tomorrow to see how long I’m out.”  Community meetings are held to outline problems and involve guests in problem-solving. Their input increases an investment in the community and reduces complaints about rules, since they helped design them.  Staff also offers guidance through letter writing and visits to jail, hospitals and treatment programs. The atmosphere created and manner of service delivery makes Listening House unique.
