Community Involvement

Listening House is a critical link in the downtown community, and it is important staff fosters trusting relationships throughout the neighborhood. Guests using our facility attend church services, frequent businesses, visit hospitals and use libraries in the area. Listening House promotes individual responsibility and staff is always available to address complaints or issues related to our services. We participate in the following associations.

• Elected member of Capitol River Council, a downtown citizens group
• Appointment to St. Paul/Ramsey County Homeless Advisory Board
• Appointment to the Skyway Task Force
• Member of St. Paul Area Coalition for the Homeless
• Member of the Mental Health Roundtable
• Co-chair of the Police/Provider Forum
• Partner to the Police Homeless Outreach Team

Education is another way we engage the community. Listening House staff offers “in-house” mentoring, and speaks publicly at schools, churches, civic groups and professional organizations.

• Community Service-Learning is an exchange between student volunteers and Listening House staff, who act as mentors. Participating schools include the University of St. Thomas, University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, Metro-State University and Cretin-Derham High School

• Training at the St. Paul Police Academy is offered annually; additionally Listening House is an approved service-learning site for police academy recruits.

• Presentations are tailored to fit the audience or work environment

• Past Workshops include “Listening Skills,” “De Escalation Techniques,” “Nursing Considerations for Homeless Patients” and “Compassion Fatigue.”
