When We Gather

It is late afternoon one day in June. I’m at a social gathering and find myself talking to a man named Frank. We’re talking passionately about football, especially the impact Bret Favre might have on the Vikings. Frank knows so much about football. I find him smart, articulate, passionate about life and an overall “good guy” We finish by saying we should visit a Vikings training camp later this summer.

After Frank, I talk to Tonya. Tonya is discussing English literature, as well as books and essays she’s read. She then tells me she’s fascinated by the working of the brain. She’s knowledgeable about that also. Tonya currently is taking classes at a local university and is enthusiastic about her higher education. She, too, is passionate about life and has a wonderful sense of humor.

These two examples, among dozens of others I have had the pleasure to be a part of, could be at any party you and I have attended. However, this is a typical day at the Listening House. People, just like you and me getting together to play chess or cards, talk and laugh, and be a part of the experience. I’m a volunteer at Listening House. Since becoming a volunteer I came to realize we’re all the same! Simply “human beings!” We all have trials and tribulations, hopes and dreams and more importantly, our successes. The difference is that these individuals have often been dealt a different hand of cards than most of us.

I should tell you though, the first time I walked into Listening House, I was a bit taken aback. It was December, the day was cold, and it was crowded. My first reaction was “Are there this many homeless people in St. Paul?” (I have since come to learn there are hundreds more needing our help) My next thought was “Am I safe here?” Not to worry! I found the guests to be courteous, friendly, fun, welcoming and I have come to feel a part of the “family.” I couldn’t feel safer!

It is my privilege to volunteer at Listening House as well as an honor to compose this message……for there are dozens of volunteers doing good work who add to the quality of such a wonderful place.

I always am amazed by the energy of “the living room for the homeless.” The staff is professional, personable, caring and compassionate and welcomes volunteers as part of the team. The guests are gracious and appreciative of this little haven. It is truly a fantastic place!

Volunteering is such a worthwhile endeavor, and, as I have happily found, you get more from it then you give. Helping at Listening House is a gift. However, if there is another opportunity that you are passionate about, please get involved, but GET INVOLVED! For my money though, there is no place better than Listening House!

My time at Listening House has “made a difference” to our guests, by providing a “home”….to our community, by providing a necessary service…..and to me, by providing the opportunity to “see” we all are the same. I am truly privileged to be a part of the Listening House “team!”
