St. Paul Day Shelter to Close on West 7th Street

Correction: Listening House’s hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday - Friday

Our mission at Listening House is “welcoming our community through radical hospitality.” As part of the ecosystem of care for those experiencing homelessness and isolation in St. Paul, we make connections to case managers, healthcare professionals and housing specialists.

Homelessness as we know it is a modern experience. Without a comprehensive plan for affordable housing, a tipping point has been reached and today homelessness is felt in every service area and budget from public safety to emergency care to schools, libraries, and public transportation.

Our Freedom House location closed May 8. Freedom House was an 18-month pandemic-time collaboration with temporary funding that came to a close. We are grateful for our hardworking staff who lent their talents to our community during a time of great need. The Listening House Board of Directors and executive leadership are exploring options and considering the best way to meet the needs of some 70,000 guest visits a year. If we could wave a magic wand, we would secure a permanent location that has the infrastructure and access to support Saint Paul’s service and capacity needs.

We appreciate the attention KARE 11 brought to the needs of the unsheltered in St. Paul. As Jana Shortal said, "we're talking about people's lives here, and their needs don't just go away." LH is working hard to plan for our future and we remain focused on the community. Listening House, on Maria Avenue in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, is still open every weekday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
